Issue #1, Page #6: A Reasonable Question

Another reveal of our “zombie rules”: John’s not eating brains (although Julie obviously has some concerns on that front). But he isn’t eating beef and bell peppers, either: more on that tomorrow.

This page does make it clear that the family is in on John’s secret, though. There’s no doubt that Julie knows, and the intent was that the reader know she’s worked it out for herself. Signifying that the Returners can “cover” only superficially is important as a plot point: you can pass as a human in a dark office, or walking past someone on the street, but prolonged contact with anyone makes it pretty clear you’re dead.

More on what John IS eating tomorrow, and how that might have affected the series if it had been an ongoing.

PAGE SIX – FOUR PANELS

Ambiance: continuing the skewed look at family life, resonance of the original “Happy Birthday, Angel!” chapter.

PANEL ONE:
JOHN and JANE are having dinner. JOHN is eating an amporphous greyish blob while JANE is having a more traditional meal – pork and mashed potatoes, or something.

PANEL TWO:
Splash-ish panel... bigger than average, emphasizing JULIE's emphasis. JOHN is pausing, fork halfway to his lips, as JULIE peeks around the corner.
JULIE
Daddy?

PANEL THREE
Close on JULIE, eyes wide, a little afraid.
JULIE
Are you going to eat my brains?

PANEL FOUR
JOHN is aghast. JANE is too, but faster on the recovery.
JOHN
Oh boy.
JANE
Julie, sweetie, nobody's going to eat your brains.
